Job Title: Senior Consultant Transport (Development) Planner

Term: Full time permanent

The Opportunity: Due to a significant and rapidly expanding forward workload, we are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, self-motivated and ambitious individual to join our team as a Senior Consultant Transport Planner, (Development). The right candidate will have the appropriate technical skills, along with the ability and desire to play a key role in the day to day delivery of projects. They will have a willingness to get involved in client and budget management and marketing / work winning, whilst supporting junior team members to assist their development. In return they will be supported in their professional development by more senior colleagues.

The Role:

The role will, principally, involve the preparation of Transport Statements, Transport Assessments, site access feasibility assessments and Travel Plans as part of the planning process, including (but not limited to):

  • Preparation of Transport Statements, Transport Assessments, site access feasibility assessments and Travel Plans as part of the planning process, drawing on knowledge / experience of the various technical components, with support from senior colleagues as appropriate;
  • Assisting with the preparation of fee proposals alongside more senior colleagues;
  • Managing competing deadlines, ensuring specific tasks are completed within agreed timescales and budgets;
  • Building / maintaining successful client relationships, as well as confidently liaising with 3rd parties (e.g. local authorities) on specific projects; and
  • Helping to support the development of junior colleagues, passing on knowledge and experience.

Must-Have Requirements:

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in the transport (development) planning industry, including in preparing Transport Assessments, Transport Statements and Travel Plans autonomously;
  • An appreciation of the basic principles of highway design, including relevant standards / guidance;
  • An understanding of key transport planning policy documents and how these relate to development;
  • Excellent report writing, other written and numerical presentation skills;
  • Good communication skills and a confidence to engage with senior colleagues, clients and 3rd parties;
  • Good organisation and prioritisation skills, with an aptitude for managing competing project deadlines and client expectations;
  • Awareness of financial management, with an ability to ensure delivery of tasks / projects within specific time / budgetary constraints; and
  • A desire to work in a small consultancy environment and play a key role in the future development of the Development Planning team.

The right person will have demonstrable technical skills, along with a proven track record in leading the day to day delivery of projects, client and budget management and marketing / work winning. They will play a key role in supporting junior team members to assist their development and, in return, they will be supported in their professional development by more senior colleagues.

The Role:

The role will, principally, involve:

  • Leading the preparation of Transport Statements, Transport Assessments, site access feasibility assessments and Travel Plans as part of the planning process, drawing on detailed knowledge / experience of the various technical components, including junction modelling;
  • Preparing proposals for a range of clients / development types, demonstrating an understanding of fee structures and the wider consultancy market;
  • Assisting senior colleagues to manage team resources to ensure deadlines are met, whilst maintaining a high standard of work;
  • Supporting the development of junior colleagues, passing on knowledge and experience;
  • Managing project budgets, in terms of staff time and disbursements, using the company’s timesheet / financial management software package. Ensuring profitability on projects in line with the company’s expectations; and
  • Building / maintaining successful client relationships and translating this into work won.

Must-Have Requirements:

  • A minimum of 7 years’ experience in the transport (development) planning industry, including in preparing Transport Assessments, Transport Statements and Travel Plans autonomously;
  • Knowledge of highway design and the ability to apply knowledge / experience to site layout / access arrangements, commenting on the suitability of designs and offering advice to clients in this regard;
  • Excellent report writing, other written and numerical presentation skills and the ability to quality-check work of more junior colleagues;
  • Good communication skills and a confidence to engage with senior colleagues, clients and 3rd parties;
  • Excellent organisation and prioritisation skills, with an aptitude for managing competing project deadlines and client expectations, both in terms of own work and that of more junior colleagues;
  • Experience of financial management, with an ability to ensure delivery of tasks / projects within specific time / budgetary constraints; and
  • A desire to work in a small consultancy environment and play a key role in the future development of the Development Planning team.
