Over the past two years, TPS has been supporting Henlow Academy, Bedfordshire (via PCMS Design), providing highways advice in support of its large scale expansion.
Our initial role included the preparation of a Transport Statement and Travel Plan in support of an application for an additional 6 classrooms (known as Phase 2). The assessment considered the uplift in trips that might result from the expansion and how these might be distributed throughout the local highway network, As part of the assessment, a staff and pupil survey was carried out and this helped inform the likely trip generation. Consideration was given to the timing of trips (i.e. determining what proportion would occur in the network peak hours), with a view to identifying any junctions, locally, where a material impact might be anticipated.
Discussions with the Council resulted in the requirement to model a roundabout junction in proximity to the school; we utilised Junctions software in order to illustrate that the proposals would not detrimentally impact on junction capacity. The application was granted consent and the development has since been constructed and is now operational.
We have recently been appointed to prepare an updated Transport Statement and revised Travel Plan to support an application for an additional two classrooms and 7 new parking spaces and look forward to working with PCMS in the future.
