Brunton First School – Walk to School Week

Lots of fun activities took place at Brunton First School during their Walk to School Week (6th – 10th March) despite the chilly north east weather doing its best with a mixture of snow, sunshine and showers!

As part of our Travel Plan Coordinator role at Newcastle Great Park, we assisted in organising a fun and exciting event for the pupils of Brunton First School. We blinged-up school bags with stickers, light tags and reflectors and had a nature spotting competition organised by Northumberland Wildlife Trust. We also organised a visit from the brilliant team from Halfords who provided ‘Dr Bike’ (free basic bike checks) for 40 bikes, followed by an ‘M-check’ assembly for Year 4s, and relaunched the ‘Park & Stride’ initiative.

Ashley Foster, Walk to School Week lead for Brunton First School, said “It was simply brilliant having the Halfords mechanics visit us as part of Walk to School Week. They did an amazing job with the Dr Bike service, Jon and Matt worked throughout the day to check over all the bikes, then Matt gave a brilliant talk to our Year 4s on how to perform a basic M-check to help them start to ride independently. We’d love to have them back again soon given the huge demand we’ve had for Dr Bike!”

If you missed out on Walk to School Week, not to worry, Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel is back. The national event aims to promote walking, cycling, and scooting to school. It inspires pupils to make active journeys to school, improve air quality in their neighbourhood and discover how these changes benefit their world.
